“Teachers Engaged with the Community –  For the Development of ESD – “

This is an online video learning material, produced in cooperation with the Okayama Prefectural Board of Education and the Okayama City Board of Education, and other organizations/personnels in RCE Okayama, as part of the FY 2020 Programme to Foster Leaders for the Achievement of SDGs (ESD).
The program by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology(MEXT), encourages the ʻDevelopment of digital teaching materials to improve “The Capacity to Engage with the Community (Engagement Competency)” of Teachers Working on ESDʼ.

PURPOSE OF THE VIDEO LEARNING MATERIAL

In response to the current matter of how to develop teachersʼ ʻEngagement Competencyʼ, which is important for the further development of ESD, we aim to provide materials for collaborating with schoolteachers by identifying authentic yet familiar examples of ESD and including the most recent opinions of practitioners.

Rather than presenting answers, such as ʻHereʼs how to make ESD in collaboration with the local community work wellʼ or manuals, we focused on the experiences and professional development of teachers who have actually promoted ESD in the field of education and local people who have collaborated and explored perspectives to overcome various difficulties.

In the production process, the participation of teachers, students, and citizens involved in ESD was emphasised and their opinions were incorporated. This process can be thought of as stimulating new educational practices or as a process of formulating ESD communities of practice in which learning is shared, reflected, and attributed meaning.

Similarly, video materials are posted on the Internet and are simultaneously produced with English subtitles. By making watching videos more convenient in various locations and regions, we hope to create opportunities for mutual learning using video materials across schools, regions, and countries.

Sub-textbook of the video in English is also published in PDF format: Supplementary-reader.pdf

The purpose of this book, which is a supplementary reader for the video material, is to enable more effective use of the approximately 15-minute video material for training and classes at universities. Similar to the video material, it can be viewed online and downloaded.

We provide detailed information regarding the areas and people related to the video material content. In addition, you can learn more about what was stated in the video during the interview data collection.

After watching the video, I hope you will learn more, depending on your interests.

In preparing the video materials and this book, we referred to the opinions of elementary, junior high, and high school teachers and university students who participated in the ESD UNESCO Associated School Workshop held at Okayama University in August 2020.

In addition, we received guidance and advice from Ms. Masako Kataoka, Ms. Junko Komori, and Ms. Meiko Hara, who are all ESD coordinators, as well as Ms. Hiroko Mesaki of Okayama Prefectural Ichinomiya High School, Mr. Jun Takagi of Okayama Prefectural Yakage High School and Ms. Sachiyo Sadoh of Okayama Prefectural Hayashino High School, who were commissioned as ESD core teachers. Photos and other materials are kindly provided by YKG 60, Yakage High School and Minan Junior High School. Professor Tomonori Ichinose of Miyagi University of Education and Professor Kiichi Oyasu of the Asian Culture Centre of UNESCO (ACCU) provided expert opinions and advice for the Japanese version of the ESD.

Professor Dzulkifli Abdul Razak of International Islamic University Malaysia, Professor Ari Widodo from Indonesia University of Education, Indonesia, and Professor Jestoni Babia from the University of San Jose ‒ Recoletos, Philippines provided ESD teacher education expert opinions and advice for the English-subtitled version.
