History

ESD promotion center was launched in Okayama University Graduate School of Education in 2010 for the purpose of supporting ESD in school education and local communities.
We started late compared to the other domestic institutes in the middle year of the United Nation’s “Decade of Education for Sustainable Development” (DESD). Yet we could take advantages to learn from the precedent cases that showed the challenges as well as the achievements. Using the knowledge, we could rapidly develop our activities to meet the needs of school education and local communities for the early stage of our project.
In 2010, at the start of our project, we implemented three plans below to establish a good foundation for full-scale activities in the following years.
①Activities to raise awareness for ESD
②Building an ESD network
③Awareness of the needs of school education and local community
In 2011, we organized workshops or events for the schools related to UNESCO associated school or ESD promotion activities in Okayama region. In this year, we supported 17 schools to register as UNESCO Associated Schools and assisted ESD practices at the primary schools and the junior-high schools in Okayama-city.
In 2012, we supported 14 more schools to apply for registration of UNESCO associated schools. We also organized “workshops for ESD UNESCO Associated Schools in 2012” and provided a necessary assistance to the applicant schools such as dispatching instructors.
In 2013, we are consistently working on supporting the schools and the local communities to promote ESD. Until now, our department has prepared the support system to conduct additional activities: supportive teachers and staffs are stationed at ESD promotion center. Moreover, from 2013 to 2014, we are taking a role of the head office of UNESCO Associated Schools Project Network (ASPnet). As our project has been receiving considerable publicity, Okayama city delegated UNESCO associated school promotion project to our center. We will continuously undertake various projects to improve the quality of ESD practice.
